Fire Service Mourns The Loss Of DO Collins

Members of the Barbados Fire Service mourn the sudden passing of retired Divisional Officer Glanville Collins. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Collins family during this difficult time. Funeral arrangements for the late Glanville Collins will be made public in a subsequent announcement.

Firefighters Concerned About House Fires

The recent escalation of house fires is generating much concern within the ranks of the Barbados Fire Service. The department is concerned about the high incidence of residential fires and the devastation caused by these fires despite the on-going fire prevention initiatives being conducted by the fire service. Fire At Dodds Land Burns Two Homes

An early morning fire at Dodds Land, St. Philip has destroyed one timber house with contents and extensively damaged a second stone and timber dwelling. The blaze which occurred just before 2 a.m. this morning (September 17) was fought by eight officers with two fire tenders under the command of Divisional Officer Ricardo Gittens and Station Officer Mervin Mayers. Investigations are continuing.

Swift Action By Firefighters Save Home

Swift action by firefighters prevented the destruction of a dwelling house at 1st Avenue, Weekes Land, Goodland, St. Michael this morning. Firefighters were alerted to smoke emanating from the residence and quickly responded, making a forced entry to the property just after 8 a.m. One saucepan was damaged by fire; the occupant was not at home at the time of the incident.

Fire Prevention Week 2014

The importance of having smoke detectors in homes and businesses will be underscored during this year’s Fire Prevention Week, which runs from Sunday, October 5, until Saturday, October 11 under the theme: Smoke Detectors Save Lives. In an effort to raise awareness about fire prevention and education, officers from the Barbados Fire Service will conduct three evening sessions, the first on Tuesday, October 7, at the Speightstown Community Centre, St. Peter, followed by another on Wednesday, October 8, at the Glebe Resource Centre, Glebe, St. George. The final session will take place at the Princess Margaret Secondary School, Six Roads, St. Philip, on Thursday, October 9. All sessions run from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. During the week, firemen will also install smoke detectors in the homes of vulnerable persons living in communities within their station areas. Fire Service Week Of Activities 2014

The Barbados Fire Service will commence a week of activities under the theme: Working for a Safer Society, from Sunday, September 28, until Saturday, October 4, in celebration of its 59th anniversary. Activities will start with a thanksgiving service at the Calvary Moravian Church, Roebuck Street, St. Michael, on Sunday, September 28, beginning at 9:30 a.m. The Bridgetown Fire Station at Probyn Street, St. Michael, will be home to the remaining activities for the week, starting with a Health and Safety Extravaganza on Monday, September 29, from 10:00 a.m., as firemen encourage members of the public to pay closer attention to these areas. On Tuesday, September 30, the public will have an opportunity to tour the Bridgetown Fire Station from 10:00 a.m., to see how it operates daily.
