In recognition of the 375th Anniversary of our Parliament, The Royal Commonwealth Society is hosting a day of events in Bridgetown on Friday, February 28, 2014. Starting at 10:00 a.m., at the Ministry of Education (old Queen’s College).There will be a parade of Cadets, Guides, Scouts, the mounted troupe and the Royal Barbados Police Force band, as well as athletes who will participate in the 2014 Commonwealth Games. The parade will continue along St. Michael’s Row to Jubilee Gardens, along Broad Street and end at the eastern gate of the Parliament buildings. Here they will be joined by a contingent of Beefeater Guards from London and there will be a ceremony for the raising of the 53 flags of the Commonwealth. In addition, The Royal Commonwealth Society will be partnering with the Barbados Tourism Authority and The Barbados Chamber of Commerce to have cultural street presentations following the conclusion of the Parade.

Remove all leaves from roofs, eaves and rain gutters, especially on timber structures. 3. Trim branches six feet from the ground (base of trees). Remove the trimmings and other debris after completion. 4. Keep wood piles and other combustible materials at least 30 feet from the home. 5. Down memory lane with the Holetown Festival . Four families in the Bank Hall St. Michael area are counting their losses following a fire early Wednesday morning. Around 5:30 a.m. a blaze in the densely populated area of Sealy Land, Bank Hall destroyed a stone and timber house. Three other stone and timber houses adjacent to that structure received some damage during the incident. Two fire tenders and eight officers under the command of Station Officer Tyrone Trotman responded to the blaze.

Local firefighters have been busy with three structural fires which kept the resources of the Barbados Fire Service engaged for some time during the early morning. Fire officers attended a fire at Chelsea Road which destroyed one house and slightly damaged two others. The second incident involved another dwelling, which, was also destroyed by fire at Sealy Land, Bank Hall, St. Michael. The third structural fire occurred at Grazettes Industrial Park, St. Michael and reportedly involved a laundry. Three fire tenders responded to the blaze which was eventually contained.

Another serious accident occurred yesterday morning, the latest collision involved a panel van, an SUV and a motor car. Several people were injured in the three vehicle smash-up close to the Groves junction in St. George. The driver of the van was listed in serious condition with head injuries and a suspected broken leg. Another serious accident less than 24 hours after two mass casualty incidents. The latest incident occurred around 0825 hours yesterday morning on the Spring Garden Highway near the University Hill Roundabout involving a motor car and taxi van. Three persons were injured and transported to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital via three ambulances. Both vehicles were extensively damaged. (Photos: AC)

While emergency services were busy attending the incident at Ashbury, St. George approximately one hour later a second second mass casualty incident was unfolding at Windsor Road, St. George. With beacons flashing and sirens wailing, alternate crews were dispatched to respond to a report of a three vehicle accident involving an overturned minibus and two other vehicles. This incident occurred near the junction with Brighton and Lower Greys. Twenty-five people complained of various types of injuries. Six were seriously injured; while nine were treated and discharged at the scene. The others were transported to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital by bus.

A motor vehicle accident involving a Transport Board bus and a motor car at Ashbury, St. George Saturday evening resulted in 29 people, including the bus driver with various types of injuries and one fatality. The mass casualty incident prompted responses from the Emergency Ambulance Service, Barbados Fire Service, Barbados Defence Force, Royal Barbados Police Force, Roving Response Teams and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. The incident claimed the life of the driver of the motor car. Six people were taken to hospital with serious injuries; while 16 others were treated and discharged at the scene.

Barbados Fire Service beat Psychiatric Hospital by eight wickets in the final of the 2013-14 BCA Sagicor General Shield final at Kensington Oval on Sunday. Chasing 81 for victory in 40 overs, Fire Service made 81 for two off 14.4 overs. The not out batsmen were Athelbert Brathwaite on 43 and Lonsdale Blake, 22. Brathwaite faced 42 balls and struck eight fours, while Blake received 22 deliveries and hit two boundaries. Jason Codrington was run out for one (4-1; 0.3 overs) and Shawn Sergeant, playing across, was leg before wicket by off-spinner Jamar Willoughby for ten (25-2; 4.3 overs). Psychiatric Hospital were bowled out for 80 off 26 overs after winning the toss. Veteran Alfred Alleyne topscored with an unbeaten 21 off 48 balls including two fours at No. 8. Alleyne and Anthony Massiah featured in the best partnership of the innings - 22 for the last wicket. Massiah made six off 36 balls. The last two wickets added 42.
